Ran the numbers for our household to use as a selling point for xeriscape in my business.

See where your water use area stands and how you compare.

We use 86 gallons of water per person per day vs 182 for our area.

As a matter of fact I ran the numbers for the last five years and we have been water savers never going over 100gal per person per day as far back as I have records.

And for the data nazis I added 10 percent to our numbers for outside home water use as well.

About 5 gallons per day when using on-board systems (freely!), including my luxury 3-gallon hot showers Probably four times that when using flush toilets ashore - no options available to do otherwise sensibly

Not sure, but I remember my last bill said I was using 40% of what I was using this time last year. We live in a forested area. No real landscaping (no need) and no lawn. Plus I can pee in the woods. That probably saves 10 gallons a day.

Our water company reported a 50% drop in use as a whole. That's for about 10,000 households.

My tomatoes are thirsty in this heat, but doing fine in pots, which cut down on water use. F the lawn.
The fish will just have to deal with less frequent water changes, but they don't appear to care about it, as long as they get cheese and zucchini.

You know what they say in the mountains and you're on a well, " If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down."

Little known to city slickers and others obsessed with living in "modern" houses, uh, is a little boater's trick of dropping a sugar cube into a pee bottle or jug. No urine smell.

all I can say is: wow and I am sorry for all of you. We have a slight shortage of water here, mainly because the rain we have received has been short or very soft, but we certainly are not in the condition you are.

There are two reasons we Californians are in the shape we are in vis a vis water:

1) our population - 38 million and climbing. number probably does not include illegals

2) the environmentalists have fought tooth and nail against any and every effort yo increase water storage capacity since the early 70's. New Melones Dam, anyone?

Triple our population and expect that abundant rain will save the day?

We learned nothing from the drought of 1975-1977. Well, I did, but the environmentalists did not. Never mind the various water agencies in this state, of which there is one for every river and lake, it seems.

Wanna live in California? Then start demanding more and more water storage. Either that or go back to where you came from.
