Actually... yeah. We elected a Governor that pronounced it that way, so having it pronounced that way must not bug too many people. Sure we made fun of him for it but still elected him and if the highest ranking official in a state can get elected pronouncing it that way, then yeah it's a legitimate pronunciation.

If you and all your friends are from "OC" (which is derogatory in it's own gloriousness), then please continue with the "Cali" stuff. The backwards caps are not always an automatic giveaway, but about 99% accurate.
What in the world are you even talking about? Backwards caps? If you're talking about baseball caps, 2 things: 1) no one calls them caps and 2) no one wears them backwards anymore, it's not the 90s.

And making fun of OC? Really? Is that all they teach up there in the Bay Area? How to generically make fun of SoCal?

Oh no, I said SoCal, someone run and get the abbreviation police!

Seriously people, who gives a crap what anyone else calls the state? Don't like it? Don't say it.

Seems to me that the only people hating the term Cali are those that are trying to prove their Californianess and look cool in front of all their internet friends.

Other than on city data, I've never heard anyone use "Cali". Lived in California since 1961 and never heard this abbreviation other than on CD.

To me, it does sound like someone from someplace else is trying too hard and yes, it's a huge tip off that they are not from California.

Gee whizikers, jam, that's a swell first post! Golly!

By the way, "Ahnold" didn't pronounce it "Cally-fornia". He said "Collie-fornia". You know like doin' "it" with a dog. Which, he kinda sorta was known to do. But I digress.

Anyway, welcome to the Forum. I predict you will be a hit!

The first time I heard "Cali" was when Dre and Tupac used it in the song "California Love" in the mid-90's. It is a slang term rather than a gague of one's "native" status. Of course other people picked it up and started using it after pop artists (or rappers) put it out in the mainstream. This is how pop culture works.

If you are born and raised in CA you are sounding both dated and desparate for "native" status by complaining about this. This entire state is a hodge podge of people from everywhere. They bring their own culture, slang, food etc with them when they come here. Our diversity IS our single most identifiable trait. So, you.are not being a good Californian if you start acting provincial with correct words to use here, etc. Beyond that, slang and english language in general is constantly evolving. You can whine about peoole using words like "Cali" or "twerking" lol, but it's not likely to change anytime soon.

Bingo on your last point. Our state is known for tolerance, not provincialism. I think most of the people complaining about this moved from somewhere else 5 or 6 yrs ago and are now trying to claim native status for some reason (who cares where anyone is from?). Ironically, in 'general', if you are complaining about the word "Cali", that is actually an indication that you are from somewhere else.

There's nothing wrong with having common traits. If you use Cali, that means you're from out of state. Be proud of it, as we're proud we're not. Tupac was from New York. anyways, it's a dead giveaway. Oh well. Enjoy being from somewhere else.

The thread asks an opinion from natives about referring to their home- there’s no logical reason why anybody would bristle at the majority opinion.

If you have such an infatuation with term, use it as much as you please. Go nuts. In fact, tattoo it on your foreheads so everybody else can see you coming.

This is not the first time our state’s history when uneducated transplants mispronounced their new home state. Goin’ back to Californee:

Nobody among natives uses it. I'd never seen it nor heard it until I joined C-D.

Just like there's no reason to bristle at the minority opinion right?

I'm sure that you use no slang terms at all, which is all that Cali is. SoCal, NorCal, Cali, SF, LA, OC, Sac-town... all slang or abbreviations, but not the actual word.

Use any slang in your daily life? You must be an uneducated transplant, get out! Leave California to us highly educated people and if you have an opinion that doesn't match ours we will belittle you and tell you that you don't belong in our state, you ignorant yokel.
