City Dumps Hundreds Of Christian, Jewish And Veterans Headstones And Then Turns Cemetery Into A Dog Park

VENTURA (CBSLA.com) — A decade’s long controversy continued Wednesday over whether a former cemetery in Ventura should remain a dog park.
St. Mary’s Cemetery, located between Main and Poli streets, was turned into a recreational space in the mid-1960s.
The city removed the tombstones, but the nearly 3,000 bodies that were buried there remained at the grave site.

With the ever increasing population, expect to see a lot more of this. It's valuable real-estate that has to be redeveloped. You really think when you get buried your grave will be preserved forever?

Cemeteries are not permanent. They exist as long as the descendants of those buried there are alive. Then they get bulldozed over. Thats the way it is, and the way it has always been.

It's not just California. There are over 100 billion human graves on this planet. You are probably sitting on top of an unmarked grave right now.

Default When the government turns Arlington Cemetery into a dog park, the politicians will get what they deserve...

While the dogs and their owners are having a ball, the dead and gone are suffering how?
If the dead are aware, at any level, I'd bet they are enjoying the hoopla.
As KaaBoom points out: how many dead can we bury in private-forever reserved parking? The whole tradition is ridiculous.

Dump my silly carcass at sea. Feed the fish.

"“This isn’t a dog park. It’s hollow ground. Our pioneers are buried here. They deserve a lot more than they’re getting,” said Schleder."

lol - have to wonder if that reporter for CBS LA even knows what "hallowed" means.

It will happen. It's just a matter of time.

But it isn't being redeveloped. It's being turned into a dog park. Regardless of how dog owners feel, a dog park is not a pressing issue of importance.

Have you ever been in an old cemetery? It can be quite interesting and educational. For example, in the Gold Rush towns along Hwy-49 a visit to the cemetery reveals the nationalities of the people who settled in those communities, their occupation, and sometimes how they died. I've seen numerous tombstones that mention accidents in mines, one shot by a claim jumper, and one who died three days after being shot in a stagecoach robbery "on the road between Sacramento and Marysville." Also, during the early part of the Gold Rush there was a cholera outbreak, which was particularly lethal toward children. As a result there are hundreds of tombstones side by side where siblings lay with the date of death a very short time apart. There is a family plot in a cemetery where all five of the children died due to cholera, which their tombstones side by side with the tombstone of the last of the five stating this was the last of five children in the family to die of cholera.

And in Jackson, there was a fire in the Argonaut mine which killed 49 miners. All of them were buried in cemeteries Jackson and Sutter Creek. Again, with a historical inscription of what they did and how they died on some of the tombstones.

Exactly, it's like a pyramid scam. You pay $2,000 for a burial plot. What happens to maintenance when that $2,000 runs out? As long as the cemetery continues to sell burial plots, they can maintain the cemetery. Once it's filled up and no more revenue is coming in, it's over. They will either have to sell it for redevelopment or just abandoned it.

Save your money and have yourself cremated and your ashes scattered. Cemeteries are just a scam.

You're probably right about that. I applaud it. There is a lack of livable space in so many places due to overpopulation. I would like to see some of the larger churches moved away from the inner city and moved to the outskirts to create more housing lots. I see nothing wrong with this. Our government has encouraged too much immigration and now our quality of life is paying for it.

It's a cemetery redeveloped into a dog park.

It's simply not realistic to pay a couple of thousand dollars for a plot of land and expect to have it for eternity. It's just not going to happen.
