Nice, central valley college town with relatively low crime rates. Amenities are easy to get to. Cute downtown that caters to students. Fabulous large mansion and park. Hotter than blazes in the summer. Sorry about the unfortunate combination of expecting and divorcing.

I love Chico, but you better have a job waiting if you move there.

thank you Curmudgeon for your insightful reply and condolences. Can anyone suggest a place In California that has similar prices as redding or chico for 1-2 bd rm? Around 500-660? But that also has local walmarts, target, gas stations, grocery stores? I don't want to drive more than 5 miles just to get to a walmart or store.

But I don't want to move to a place where it's hotter than San Diego or that's too far inland.

In that case, you don't want Chico. Chico's average temperature during summer is 94. That's just the average. Take a look at some current weather sites online and see what's been happening up here in northern California this summer. Accuweather is a good one

Given how hot and muggy SD has been lately, Chico wouldnt be much of a change. In terms of averages though Chico is definitely warmer during the late spring and summer months for the most part.

Cheapest place with cooler weather than I know of is Crescent City. I'm planning to move there from Redding, as Redding is too hot for me. So, I've been checking out Crescent City.

Any cheap place to live will have some crime. Doesn't look like the crime is awful in Crescent City, but it's not crime-free.

I've been researching the town, and there is a Wal-Mart Super Center, a Grocery Outlet (my favorite cheap grocery store) and a Safeway, plenty of gas stations, restaurants, fast food places. There is a large fabric store, too, which is important to me. They also have a farmer's market.

Crescent City is cheaper than Redding, too. Weather stays cool year round, but can be cloudy, foggy and rainy. I need to live somewhere cheap, and other than the weather, I really like Redding. Great shopping options here - everything you can think of. But, the summers are too long and hot for me.

BTW, the Section 8 waiting list is open in Crescent City, and there are quite a few low income apartments there, where you can get on their waiting lists, too. If you want that info, it's here:

Here are some facebook pages for Crescent City:

Sorry for your dilemma. Good luck.
