I'm also surprised by this. I live in the Central Valley but travel regularly to LA and Orange County. So I've seen plenty of them on both the 5 and 99.

What happened to switching over to Chargers like many agencies have done?

The Explorer might make a great utility vehicle but lousy as a pursuit vehicle. It might still have the speed and HP but not the maneuvering ability.

Many of the agencies are going to the new Ford Interceptor line, using a mix of cars and the SUV's in their fleet is common practice. I can see why they would have some SUV's in their fleet as they are better for carrying supplies and such. The agencies that switched to Chargers seemed to do so a few years ago before Fords new line was out. There was some talk officers didn't like the Chargers all that well. The cabins seem larger in the new Ford.

I think a lot of police departments are switching over. I am seeing more and more SUV's with the Chula Vista Police Department and a few more than I used to see with San Diego's.

I sometimes wonder why the CHP needs a car at all every time I see them they are parked in front of a CalTrans truck behind the barricades closing the road. To actually patrol must be old school.

^ ^ Probably because it's usually very desirable OT for a CHP officer!

Im not sure how they will be received... time will tell.. everything is getting smaller.. and if the fleet sees just a 1 mpg uptick it means millions in fuel costs..

Ive never written a chicken poop ticket... but that would be a first
Well good luck catching me. Got a stage 2 turbo in a 2500 lb. car? Cause that's what I've got.

Um, he'll probably "catch" you in a bucket and rubber bag around the base of a telephone pole at some point. After you find out that a "stage 2 turbo in a 2500 lb. car" is a seriously stupid thing for an ordinary citizen to drive around on public streets.

Funny how some folks have such an 'over-inflated' self-image, especially when it involves their cars. Kinda reminds me of a bumper sticker I recently saw around here in "redneck-landia" on a beat-up old Ford Ranger p/u, that said "bad azz girls drive bad azz trucks!" (needless to say the gal driving looked just as "bad-azz" as the truck)!!
