Past:
SUP (Stand-up Paddleboarding) was pioneered here--for better or worse--by Laird Hamilton. Now it's a total old guy and yuppie craze.

Future:

Self-driving cars and automatic taxis. The legislature is already working on changing the rules of the road. Car-centric CA will be the first state where car ownership will become a thing of the past. You'll just whip out your smartphone and flag down an autotaxi for $0.75/mile (or join a club/organization that pools cars), rather than dump 10's of thousands into a new personal vehicle every few years. Car ownership will only be for hobbyists like General Aviation aircraft are today.

Probably self-flying aircraft

Drone package delivery

I think CA companies are already working on lighter-than-air transportation (dirigible/blimp) cargo deliveries. I see unmarked white blimps making maneuvers over Ventura every once in a while. I assume they're doing test runs.

Plenty of inventions here. Manufacturing of those inventions? Not so much.

That men's clothing style with the oversized pants falling off your azz.... I remember driving to work in the early '80s seeing kids at North Hollywood High dressed like that.

Tons of things come from California. The thing is, we get so used to seeing them we don't realize that the rest of the country thinks they are something new and wonderful.

Oh right. Getting drunk and / or stoned on a plethora of substances is definitely a new thing since the 1960's AD. Same with rebelling against authority. None of that existed in the good olden days when people were free, sober, and happy under their perceived oppressions.

Vega, you are a total trip. Love your posts

I think the very popular pants called "jeans" were invented here by Levi Strauss.

Oh, and let's not forget the popular method of "stopping" at stop signs called the "California stop".

Yup, forced sterilization… that was kinda popular for a longtime here, wasn't it. Although dunno that it ever "caught on" quite the same anywhere else (well, at least within the U.S.)!
Oh, and the King of Lobotomies eventually setup shop here too!

Though it's also the home of such diverse cultural phenomena as hippies, the local food movement, and the John Birch Society (often credited as the father of today's right wing conservative movement).

So what are some other good examples of past, and likely future, "inventions" and "trends" that originated here?
For the record, sourdough bread was around LONG before California. The bread in SF has been popularized, but it was hardly born there.

^ Yes, no doubt many folks are aware that it's technically among the oldest type of bread, going back to the Egyptians, with versions like the Russian "Borodinsky", the Italian "Coppia Ferrarese", Danish "Rugbrød" and many others all around the world.

Although the popular name "sourdough", and the particular bacterial culture they used, began in Cali during the Gold Rush, and eventually caught on nationwide when the typically bland "white bread" had become so common in this country, that even writer Henry Miller once complained, "You can travel 50,000 miles in America without once tasting a piece of good bread."

So we do seem to have a knack for making certain things "popular", even if they weren't 'born' here (kinda like movie stars)!
