I'm a single 26 year old guy in the Navy, with a very good possibility of being transferred to Lemoore for 3 years. Now before you bring the criticism, I KNOW a daily commute from Fresno to Lemoore will be a huge headache. I'm willing to make the hour drive considering the alternative: living in Hanford for 3 years surrounded by thousands of other military personnel. I prefer to live in a larger city, away from the military, with more opportunities for a night life and socializing with other young singles. Plus, I enjoy Salsa dancing and it seems like there aren't any places in the small towns surrounding Lemoore.

If I move to Fresno, I want to live in an area that is walking distance to markets, restaurants, and the night life. I've been researching and have seen a lot of posts claiming that I should stay away from South or West Fresno and focus more on North Fresno or Clovis. However, I've also seen posts suggesting that the Tower District would be the best spot to live for what I'm looking for. Any insight?

The most walkable neighborhood is the Tower District. It was built during the early 20th and has a commercial strip that reflects that scale. I haven't lived in Fresno since the 90s, so maybe someone else can chime in if the basics of the city have changed. I know I enjoyed living in the Tower - it had some character where most of Fresno is suburban sprawl.

I don't believe you will find what you want here. A place to live that is walking distance to markets and nightlife, specifically clubbing/dancing.... Anything close to that will get you mugged or your car stolen weekly. Plus I don't know your monthly budget. I use to work at a retail store and had a coworker that was in his mid 30s. He had a great day time job and was so bored at the lack of nightlife availible he took the evening job at the retail store as to not die of boredom. Then his day time job offered him a killer position in S.F.

Moral is, Fresno sucks and don't bank on it.

Except for the Tower District, Fresno resembles one huge strip mall.

For what you want, I'd zero in on living somewhere off of Nees between Palm and First Street (in Fresno). Close to River Park and close to several grocery stores, too. Also close to 41 for commuting purposes. Now, you won't be able to walk everywhere (Fresno is really a car-based city), but you'll be able to walk to quite a few spots.

The Tower District is a good option, but has a different vibe than NE Fresno. The Tower is an older area and attracts a more artsy, liberal crowd. Just depends on what you're looking for.

PopWarmer, your only option is the Tower District, as everyone already mention Fresno is a car dependable city. North East is nice but has no vibe and u need a car, The River Park area you still need a car, and there is only chain stores and restaurants. You can get a nice studio on Tower or Condo and just walk or bike to the restaurants and stores. plus you will be closer to Hanford. You can also look into the new studios on the Mural District in down town.

Check out the Cottswolds at Champlain and Perrin. Its right next to a shopping center called Piazza Del Fiore. They even have a farmers market every Friday in the summer/fall.
