I could care less about the earning potential of corporations/the private sector. I'd much rather have the job security of a state job without the killer application process of a federal job.

Not sure how many openings you'll find for "Kung-Fu Master". But perhaps in the governor's Budget Office. Lots of shouts and hand chops there in the past couple years.

Even during so-called "hiring freezes" there are plenty of openings and a fair amount of hiring. In most cases pay and working conditions are just ok but the benefits are great, at least for now. State service is also one of the last bastions of defined-benefit pensions, at least for now. Once you lock those in you're good to go but watch for changes coming soon to a neighborhood near you. Downside: you have to work with state civil servants!

Sounds like me 30 years ago, except I went for the county level stuff. Glad I did. Moderate pay, job security and good benefits.

State jobs: https://jobs.ca.gov/

County Jobs: Merit System Services Home Page Or go to the particular county's website (where you would like to live) for job openings.

I went to the county level so I could control where I lived. On the state level you could wind up anywhere from Bakersfield to Alturas. I really did not want to get stuck in LA as a state employee.

In high demand? Yes, but it depends on what you do. It is still a civil service procedure - you have to take a test, rank, and be in the top three ranks to be hireable.

I've worked both in a private consulting firm, at the county level, and at the state level in the same field. I got tired of the pink slip hanging over my head constantly at the private consulting firm. I make less in government, but I work in a public trust field and I do good, important work. It is fulfilling.

What field do you work in?
