Taft, Delano, Pixley and Strathmore as well.

I'd put Holtville at the top of the list because of the Carrot Festival.

I can't believe some one said you can't get a studio for under $1500 a month. That is 100% not true. I used to live one and a half blocks from the beach, in a BIG one bedroom, in a nice community. It was 820 sqft and had gardens all around it, this was in orange county. I paid $1300 a month. There are LOTS of deals like that out there and to be honest they are not hard to find. Sounds like the OP is fairly internet savvy, so keeping a watch on Craigslist and Zillow is pretty much all you need to do. OP, if what you want is a safe more suburban feeling area you will definitely want to be just outside the city. Again, if you live in Orange County you're right on the border of Los Angeles. -Most- people agree right around the central core of Los Angeles is not very nice. San Diego has more exceptions to this than Los Angeles, but even there you'd want to be a careful as to where you lived if you went downtown. Also, some parts of Oceanside can be a little bit sketchy.

You can totally live in a nice area, in Southern California, in a 1 bedroom and not a tiny one for $1200-$1500 a month and even be close-ish to the beach if you just look around and put some effort into it. Yes, if you stop by the first major luxury super-chain apartment complex and rent out a 1 bedroom with death-star approved appliances and a view of the ocean, it'll cost you $1800. The only place it's hard to find exceptions at is Irvine. Irvine is ALL NEW, ALL EXPENSIVE, ALL INCLUSIVE, etc.

Don't look too hard. Most of those location posts, including mine, were tongue-in-cheek. With your professions you will likely be better off looking for real cities and vacation spots - beach towns/cities. The Bay Area and Sacramento and environs might yield some possibilities. Of course there's L.A. and its beach towns. The possibilities are endless. None are particularly cheap. Best of luck.

Good point! OP, sorry, we were entertaining ourselves on a couple of those posts. I was joking about Redding (town I just moved from). I was not joking about Monterey and Pacific Grove.

The more I think about it, I highly suggest you check out Pacific Grove. It's a beautiful, charming town with a lot of Victorian houses, right on the ocean with lots of arts events and a farmer's market, quaint shops, etc. I'd love to live there.

Congrats on the visa, and welcome!
