^ True, but on $90K a year he should be able to find something modest to start, and even more important, being closer to the coast will mean much better opportunities for growth and professional contacts within his particular field. Hard to see that happening in the "low rent" (and low tech) areas!

He said up to, but he also said 70. Either way, you're paying a lot to live in California. I have a feeling that OP just wants to escape something, not that he's looking for better opportunities necessarily

^ Well it's still no coincidence that everywhere, including in your own Ohio, the places where Tech is thriving these days, also usually tend to be the ones with jobs, higher incomes (and a higher COL). Nuthin's ever 'free', and the local "cult-chah" (or the lack thereof) may be one of the things he's also looking to "escape"!

Northeast Ohio enjoying growth in high-tech jobs

OP, you can do a lot better in the Pacific NW. You can live on the Olympic Peninsula for much cheaper; a 3-br. for $1250, friendly folks in Port Townsend, kind of an artsy, liberal town like CA, with lots of music festivals, boat festivals, all kinds of goings-on. No state income tax. Great town for kids. Close to Seattle, yet in the "rain shadow" of the Olympic mountains, so it gets significantly more sun than Seattle. Did I mention no state income tax? And gas is cheaper.

Think about it.

Port Townsend is the greatest small town ever. But it doesn't get hardly more sun. Doubt if the difference is practically noticeable. It does, however, get less rain. A lot less. THAT is very noticeable

What are you talking about? I never once stated which state or which city I live in. And the post makes no sense. Ohio has a lower cost of living just like any other midwestern state. California is a good state, but too expensive. In Ohio, you can buy a $400,000 and it's a massive house. In California, that's almost barely enough for a standard two-story house.

Thanks for the correction. A lot less rain than Seattle is definitely something. Though I do need sun, being a native Californian, and all..... Are you sure about the sun? Sequim gets more sun. Pt T isn't too far from there.... ?

It's basically a Sequim Chamber of Commerce marketing myth. Technically, yes, the sun peeks through the clouds here and then more than the rest of the Sound. But on any useful scale of experience and pleasure, the grey remains very close to the rest of the NW. But, measurable precipitation varies around the Sound greatly. Sequim and Port Townsend and Coupeville (on Whidbey island) have half or less the precip that Seattle has. While Olympia and the Snohomish "convergence zone" just north of Seattle experience half again more than Seattle.

The recommendation to the OP to explore the region is excellent. But reality is it's all very grey 2/3 of the year up there west of the Cascades. And, even the areas like Pt. Townsend that get less rainfall still feel damp and chill most of the year. Really, Seattle's 40" of rain a year isn't a lot of inches compared to other places all around the country. The bad rap comes from the persistence of mist and drizzle and clammy chilly grey.

*Brrrrrrrr!* Just thinking about it is weighing me down! On to other topics!

This isn't a thread about moving the the Pacific NW. This is about moving to CA.

Really? And how would you know this? Never mind. It's a rhetorical question.
