As an infantryman over the course of eight years I don't know how many miles I "hiked" but I think it was a lot. Then some dang fool came up with APCs and fun over along with challenge and sense of pride/accomplishment.

Wish I'd known about the Pacific Crest way back when. I'd-a walked it! Alas, no Internet back then.

I love the perspective of LA folk.

"East of the Bay Area, Hank Magnuski functions as a sort of outdoors concierge, erecting a pop-up cafe to provide hot coffee and fresh fruit topped by whipped cream to hikers coming off a particularly grueling 300-mile stretch."

Yes, Sonora Pass is technically "east of the Bay Area". A five hour drive east. Part of the Great Unknown for most Angelinos. I would have described the location as an hour SW of Reno.

Very nice story. Trail angels also care-take the Appalachian trail. I wonder if they realize what a difference they make?
