You know Compton up to around 2005 all the way back from the 1960's was known as one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. Some years in the late 80's and early 90's it would average like 100 murders a year at a population of 90,000. But now it seems to have calmed down quite a bit compared to even 10 years ago. But now look at Oakland these days. The city in 2013 had the 2nd highest violent crime of any big city in the U.S only behind Detroit. So you guys, what city do you think is the more dangerous? Compton or Oakland? What city has more gangs?

Oakland has some very nice upper-middle class areas (Rockridge and the areas in the hills), which Compton is basically devoid of any nice areas. Gangs? Hard to say, the "flats" in Oakland are rough and "ghetto-like" (take BART at Fruitvale Station and you'll see), but there's some decent, hard working people living there. I don't believe that's the case with Compton, though.

Seriously? You believe an entire city is devoid of "decent and hard working people"? How many times have you actually been to Compton to develop such an opinion? I go to Compton about once or twice a week and I can honestly say the stereotype that whites have labeled Compton with is the result of a 20 to 30 year old outdated perception... Posting videos from the 80s is proof in point...

Oakland is more dangerous. Compton is changing demographically. It's becoming more of a working-class Latino city now.

White fear is funny.

If you're not a homie trying to mess with homies, then you just might survive Oakland.

Compton is bad but still heaven compared to detriot. As time goes by and LA in general cleans up it'll eventually reach Compton. I pass by Compton almost every day and it looks like western part of Compton appears pretty decent. I'd say Oakland is worse.

Compton, on average, is comparable to the better parts of Oakland (i.e. Rockridge, Piedmont Ave, etc.) I've found the crime statistics of Compton to be similar to those neighborhoods although the source is from a site that I'm prohibited from posting here so Google for it.

piedmont and rockridge are really nice and expensive areas. Not nice for oakland but nice for anywhere. Oakland is much bigger and has a more diverse range of neighborhoods than compton. I guess if you looked from a total numbers per capita view you could technically say which city is overall more dangerous but on the street level I don't think there are any neighborhoods in compton that are as nice and safe as the good neighborhoods in oakland.
