West Virginia and Virginia, for one. WV wanted to join the union, VA was capitol of the Confederacy. I'm sure the divide between the Carolinas was political, as was the divide between the Dakotas.

Really? Because North Dakota and South Dakota are such political opposites? LOL

Maybe not now, but who knows at the time they split? I don't know the history there but there's a reason they split. Hell, a huge chunk of the entire country was all called "Louisiana Territory" at one point too, before it fractured into smaller states and territories.

As I understand it, the entire universe split at least once. With a Big Bang!
Probably political discord.

California doesn't need to split into two states, what needs to happen is that the liberal Bay Area needs to succeed from the union lol. Good riddens.

Let Northern California be its own entity and let us in So Cal be ours.

We, in So Cal, would be more business-friendly, less expensive and more welcoming of innovators and producers.

We would cut taxes and have more industry down here, without being burdened by useless regulations and red-tape that originate in Northern California.

They could keep Sacramento as their capitol and we could find a prettier one (San Clemente? Escondido? Santa Barbara?) for us.
If anything a state of Southern California would have even higher taxes, more red tape, and more useless regulations, probably more hostile to business, and would be just as expensive.

Unless it consisted only of San Diego, Imperial, and Riverside counties.

The divide between the Carolinas was because their colonies were too far apart to be governed as one.

The divide between the Dakotas was because the Dakota territory was too large to be incorporated as a single state.

In neither case was it political.
