The blizzard hitting the East Coast, which has already been declared a state of emergency, caused me to go pull some files. Part of my job involves doing declared disaster reporting. Here are the recent events to hit the East Coast causing property losses:

2006 - Blizzard
2006 - Flood
2008 - Ice Storm
2011 - Hurricane Irene
2012 - Superstorm Sandy

And now another to greet 2015.

Something to remember next time someone starts up a thread on the California forum saying they'd like to move here but they're worried about "all those earthquakes".

As a life-long East Coaster, I regret everything I ever said about you guys getting earthquakes as opposed to us getting snow.

Hope you guys end up okay! And if it's any consolation, my post has undoubtedly jinxed us and the Big One will hit tomorrow.

If that happens, we're coming after you. I'll take the infrequent earthquakes over being snowed in every year.

Not even comparable! The snow in NYC will melt before Valentine's day but the infrastructure devastation from a major earthquake will take several years to recover from.

I've always wondered the same thing, I'm glad someone finally said it "out loud". Honestly, I'd be terrified to move to the NE. It's not just those disasters, it's the power outages they cause. Massive electrical fail, no heat. The power infrastructure all over the US needs upgrading.

But at least you won't freeze to death because your electricity/heat went down for a week or two during a blizzard.

Sorry to disagree, but I'm in the property/casualty insurance business. We're still adjusting property claims from Superstorm Sandy two years ago. And how long did it take to restore New Orleans after Katrina?

Did it ever get anywhere close to fully restored?
