I would imagine you'd be quite surprised. Merced absolutely oozes character in comparison to Grand Island, NE, or Salina, KS, for example.

Wow, that says a lot about what Iowa doesn't have because Merced will suck the soul out of you. I have been there.

Let's just put it this way.

The more deep "into the Heartland" you get, you hope that it gets better than what you've already passed. It doesn't. Hopes you have for these far out places get diminished upon your arrival, and ultimately you'll feel.....underwhelmed. They are every bit as boring as advertised, or imagined.

Imagine Fresno, but infinitely more dead and boring. That's Wichita.

Imagine Sacramento, but with a smelly green river, massive segregation, and poverty. That's Kansas City.

All of the supposedly horrible CA valley cities are better than "Iowa". Trust me.

It's not heaven, it's Iowa.

First off, it won't. I lived there and my soul is still quite intact, thank you. I've also lived for a year and a half in Des Moines, Iowa and outside of that city its a pretty featureless, boring place. Instead of driving 90 minutes to get to the coast or 45 minutes to get to the mountains from Merced you're driving a day and a half to get to them from Iowa.
