I'm a student in Greensboro, NC hoping to move to California next spring. The schools I am looking at are right outside San Francisco or in Los Angeles... is one place more affordable than the other?

It really depends in which direction you go from those cities.
Going inland tends to get cheaper, closer to the water is more expencive.
For rental prices at least.

Thanks. Any suggestions on where I should start looking? Aiming for the school in SF, but have had more luck with Los Angeles area. I don't mind a 30 min commute to school, already doing that now. I have a roommate which should help I assume.
I have found affordable rentals near Garden Grove, is that a safe area? Palmdale?

Los Angeles is more affordable than the Bay Area...but do yourself a huge favor and don't call the state "Cali". Doing so gives the impression that you're either:

a.) Geographically illiterate, because "Cali" is a city in the nation of Colombia, or...

b.) Mentally stuck in the 1990s ghetto rap culture that no longer exists in L.A.

What schools are you looking for? Are you going for an advanced degree, or just starting your college education? If you are just starting out you might consider community colleges which are available all over California and in much cheaper places than SF or LA. Also, the State has a great state college system with campuses throughout the state. If you are going to go to a private school or you are seeking some kind of advanced or specialized degree that's a different story.
