Yes, Contra Costa is like the tale of two counties. The west county area + Antioch/Pittsburg and to a lesser extent Concord tends to be poorer and more crime ridden. Other areas tend to have a tremendous amount of wealth, such as Lamorinda, Walnut Creek, Tri-Valley, etc.

Here's the Contra Costa county murder count by race -

Total murders: 76
White murders: 13
Hispanic murders: 19
Black murders: 40
Asian murders: 4

I lived in Salinas for seven years and Monterey for four. I'm not surprised by that at all. Its like a tale of two counties - one white, touristy and wealthy and one Latino, gang-infested and poor. I remember reading an article in the Salinas paper back in the early 2000s and it said there was like 60 homicides in Monterey County that particularly bad year. All but 6 or 7 were young Hispanic males... mostly gang members.

Hey, what about Del Norte Pole County! I thought we were full of crazy murderin' meth heads up here!

I was surprised at Humboldt County. Who's killing each other there?

It looks like that cheap labor from 10-20 years ago turned out not to be so cheap after all.

Drug dealers kill each other everywhere they operate. Otherwise, you lose business. The business is the principal reason gangs exist. Stay out of the biz, and you very likely stay out of harm's way. (Got friends who have nice properties in Salinas. Living well, and just over the hill from Monterey).

So true. My daughter had a house in Salinas and worked in Monterey. She was in South Salinas where she wouldn't catch a stray bullet, but Salinas is great if you're not in the war zone.

Yes that cheap labor just keeps costing us money. When we had the bracero program decades ago, we only allowed workers (and not their wives to come). Now we have a horrible gang problem, but hey, we've got cheap produce!

We do not have the spine to limit visas only to the workers themselves. That would not be PC. Today we need to import entire families to make sure that the produce is cheap?

But both political parties are bought and paid for on these issues, so do not expect it to change.
