Can we just relax and stop feeding the troll? He's getting a kick out of each and everyone of you that's taking this thread seriously.

But the troll is so hungry, and here in our nanny/wimpy/socialist state, we instinctively reach out to soothe and feed the unfortunate. Mushy libruls!

This is where I had dinner last night. As much character as anything on the East Coast, plus the fact that I sat outside on the patio in early April.

Like I said earlier--Mediterranean architecture--love it! ♥ It goes with the climate.

Bland state....um, Ohio?
Over the past five decades, I've lived in the Midwest, the West Coast, the Mid-Atlantic Coast, and the Mountain West. All of them have fascinating histories, but not all have equal historical value to every observer. For example, I'm most drawn to learning about my "boring" home state of Ohio because of my family's deep roots there, which reach all the way back to the initial settlement of the Connecticut and Virginia Bounty Lands. I suspect that those who find California bland and uninteresting are simply not very attached to the region.

Or, they're simply being obtuse.

I think he's just yanking your chains, but my point remains that we tend to value what is personally interesting to us. And let's face it, for every Victorian house or Spanish mission or Russian fort in California, there are tens of thousands of ugly suburban shacks just like one I lived in for nearly a decade. Regardless, an easy-to-miss, dusty little town north of Sacramento holds a special place in my heart, because my husband's great-grandfather spent the last years of his life there, and nobody has a clue how he ended up in such a place. Ultimately, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
