Where to look North of SF, South of Arcata for a beach house. Climate, lack of wind? Reasonable isolation, but close enough to basic services. Ideas?

You might check out the Bodega Bay area. I was there a couple of weeks ago. Very sunny, pretty area. It is isolated but just about half an hour to 45 minutes drive from Santa Rose. They also have a wonderful restaurant on the harbor called the Tides. Great food, touristy store, fresh seafood and many wonderful photos from the filming of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". Not in Mendocino Co. but Sonoma, it might be a good fit for you.
