Guide to California's Marijuana Laws | California NORML

Medical marijuana is legal. Recreational marijuana may be voted on in 2016. For now, it's illegal for recreational use.

That's pretty much it. However, the possession laws have been lightened for those who have Marijuana without a doctor's recommendation.

If you have a recommendation and opt to grow your own, it depends where you live if it allowed, and if allowed, how many plants you can have.

My county may be the only one left in the state without local restrictions. It has created a mini boom in my area. Every business within 10 miles has benefited from this quirky situation.

State-wise: Washington, Colorado, and soon to be Maine.

City wise: Portland, Maine.

Decriminalization: As far as I know anything on this list > States That Have Decriminalized

That's a very broad term though, not quite official.

It's basically legal in CA regardless of what's officially on the books.

Exactly. Even here in conservative Orange County the cops don't really bother you too much about it. Before I got my card I had been caught a couple times. First time he made me stomp it out on the ground, second time he let me keep it.

Alaska, Oregon and Washington DC have also legalized for recreational use.

In addition to pioneering medical marijuana legislation for possession and cultivation and decriminalizing policies statewide, police in cities like San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland have also deprioritized enforcement of marijuana laws regarding use and possession in personal amounts. This means that, in cities where police have deprioritized marijuana infractions, it is official police policy not to arrest or ticket someone for a minor marijuana infraction, as long as no other laws are being broken.

In SF, it takes a 5-minute interview with a pot doc to get a card. After that, any dispensary in the state is available. Or, there are even a couple of apps that deliver to the City (usually in 10-15 minutes) like https://www.eazeup.com/#/menu
