Slow paced California cities...Are there any left? (San Diego, Bakersfield: schools, living)

For people who enjoy a slower or semi-slow pace of living, which California cities might possess this quality?

Where,I live, although it's growing. The Banning/Beaumont area.

Of the areas with which I am familiar, any city in San Luis Obispo county will be slower paced, and the Redding area.

How about a town...Valley Springs, CA. Sierra foothills. 35 mins. from Stockton. Small community...safe schools...we don't even have a stop light. One market and a few little shopping centers...oh yeah! We also have a golf course. Everybody knows each other.

Bishop, CA which is near Mammoth Ski Area in central California is a small western-type town, with one main street, and a few thousand people.

If you want a variety of things to do, with a slower paced life-take look at South County(Orange County). It is pretty slow, just avoid PCH and the 5 freeway(mostly during rush hours). The 241 and 73 are usually empty though because they charge. There's a lot of people here... ..high density housing and not as much open space. Look towards the Saddleback Mountains(Rancho Santa Margarita) away from the beaches and that's some of the quieter territory between LA and San Diego.

In Northern California, take a look at Point Reyes Station(Marin County), Bolinas(Marin County), and Bodega Bay(Sonoma County).

Bakersfield is a rather nice and slow paced city :-)

Their are alot of other laid back towns or cities all around this State.

Bakersfield is not for everyone,but it's really not that bad.

Their are far more worst places in other parts of California and in other parts of the Country.

I would rather live in Bakersfield than anywhere in South L.A or East L.A.

Monterey and Pacific Grove are very laid back communities, but pricey. Be prepared to spend close to $800K on a 600 sq. ft. shack built in the 1920's.

Way up north in Humboldt County, there are some lazy towns like Arcata, Trinidad and McKinleyville. They're getting more expensive and there aren't many jobs up there. There is also a big drug culture in the area (pot and meth). But the redwoods are beautiful and reach to the ocean.
