Geez. I didn't intend to offend anyone who lives in and/or likes Sacramento.
The o.p. said that she wanted to be "close to the beach". And she was looking at Laguna Hills. So, given that, i thought it was odd that Sacramento was suggested. I'm fairly certain that she would not find Sacramento "close to the beach" or that it was the California of her dreams. But i dunno. Maybe i'm wrong. Maybe she'd love Sacramento.
And i provided the craigslist rental listing for Laguna Hills as a way to show her that what she was dreaming of may not be realistic / feasible given her financial situation.
Good luck, and everything has really been said, I can't really add anything to it, except this:
Moving out here U-haul wise will end up being WAYYYYYYY more than it seems.
Friends of ours did it that way (and he still wont shut up about the HELL it was lol, just everything about it), and at the end of the day I think it was only about 1k less than us having movers and taking a nice, long, unforgettable drive across the country to get here.
Good luck, though!!! 1k isn't peanuts, esp if you're on a budget, but yeah. UHAULing it is HELL.
Thanks, those from Sacramento, for explaining. I understand what you're saying. I like where I live too. I think *most* people do.
There is such a wide variety of opinions and information shared here and I think that is great. It's especially nice when people are open to allowing others to express their opinions and share information without anyone taking things too personally or letting discussions get too heated. That's when we all learn the most from each other and sometimes that's also the best way to win others over to your point of view. And, of course, sometimes you just have to pick your battles and let some stuff go.

If I was going to move cross country I would get rid of all the bulky furniture I could and use this company: http://blog.upack.com/category/abf-moving They rent containers like pods, or space (by the linear foot) in one of their trucks.
