So I'm currently going to community college on the east coast and plan on saving as much as I possibly can while getting my Associates degree to move to California. Now, I'm making this move with a family member who is four years older than I am and I wanted to know what the best area for us would be. We plan on continuing our education and working. So I wanted to know a cheap area for apartments that's still a nice area and NOT dangerous. I've heard Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Murrieta are good areas for young people but I wanted to see more options. Thank you to anyone with info!

I would spend some time looking at wages in various parts of California with an AA degree in your field, that more than anything else will determine where you can live. There aren't any cheap, safe places to live near the coast unless you live on the North Coast almost at the Oregon border and there aren't many jobs in that area. You can check job sites, or craigslist for salaries and then narrow down your options. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes

If you're intending to continue your education here in California, you'll have to wait a year after establishing residency before you qualify for in-state tuition at any public community college, state college, or university of California campus. Otherwise, you'll be paying exorbitant non-resident rates that, combined with the cost of living here, will make it financially difficult to complete your education.

Additionally, employers in California have a strong preference for applicants who already have four year degrees AND some job experience under their belts. There are low paying jobs available in retail and such, but those won't really pay the rent here.

I'd recommend completing your Bachelor's degree wherever you're currently located, preferably in a technical field like engineering or computer science, BEFORE moving to California in order to have the best chance at landing a job that will pay enough for you to live comfortably in the type of area you're describing.
