My wife and I are considering retiring to Humboldt County in the next few years. My wife is a long time Type 1 Diabetic and has had some pretty serious health issues. I have read about problems with the roll out of Obamacare in the area, including the difficulties in finding doctors who accept the insurance. My question is: Is it getting any better? Has there been any success getting more doctors signed up?

Humboldt County is not known for its plethora of doctors.

Medical care in Humboldt County is very limited. If it is serious they have to fly them by helicopter to Santa Rosa or Redding or further for medical care. I have a brother in law in Humboldt County near Eureka, that first had a stroke so they flew him to Santa Rosa, and soon after getting back on his feet, his heart started acting up and they had to fly him to Redding, where he had a quadruple heart bypass procedure. He was moved to rehabilitation care facility in Redding yesterday, and will be there 3 weeks or longer.

One reason it is hard to get doctors signed up in Humboldt, is the doctor supply is very limited, and they can get all the patients they want without resorting to Obamacare.

I was born in Fortuna 84 years ago, and I would love to live there in retirement, but the medical care is so limited I will never move back as I could not get the care I require to stay healthy. If your wife has serious medical conditions, I would recommend you find a place that can take care of her properly, and not have to be flown out for anything serious.

I appreciate the info; however, I'm not willing to give up on retiring to the North Coast yet. My wife and I love the area. Nonetheless, we will certainly have to look closely at the limitations of the local health care system.

I have been a patient at Eureka Family Practice for many years, but I no longer have an assigned doctor because a few months ago they lost two physicians and haven't been able to recruit replacements. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with their PA's, but it's an indication. They accept Medicare, don't know about Obamacare. Recruiting doctors both here and in Crescent City is tough because the doctors' SPOUSES are also looking for work and there are no $100K jobs up here like what they are accustomed to in the Bay Area. Good luck.

If you must be on the coast I'd recommend the Bodega Bay area as Santa Rosa is just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away.

That is disheartening to to hear, but I appreciate the information. Thanks.

I like Bodega Bay, but the cost of real estate there does not match up with the retirement plan...
