Governor Brown is pushing a Highway Bill to fix all our highways that includes a $65 Driver Fee, increased gas tax that will be tied to inflation, a huge tax on "polluters" however that's defined (the article didn't say) and cutting $100 million from Caltrans (so maybe outsourcing?)

The most logical way to actually get $65 from each driver is of course to order DMV to collect it with the vehicle registration.

It looks like the basic renewal fee (it varies by county) for a car that's over 11 years old is about $112. Adding $65 to that could hurt.

From the article:

"A coalition of labor unions, local government groups and influential business groups, including the California Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable, had previously outlined a plan that called for $6 billion a year in spending for 10 years."

Looks familiar. Steal from the citizens and give the money to union mafias and special interest groups. Where is all that money they raked in from increased property taxes?

Some European countries have instituted a carbon tax. It's the wave of the future.

Why cut so much from public transit? That's the opposite direction of where we need to be going.

Brown needs to keep working on this, considering different ideas. It's still a work in progress, I hope he realizes that. He doesn't have the winning formula yet.

How the hell does property tax have anything to do with road/vehicle driving taxes?

I would rather have them collect fees by the car rather than by mileage. Trucks should get charged more too since roads with trucks banned tend to last a lot longer.

However, charging trucks would mean freight gets more expensive, so everything we buy will be pricier.

Because this has nothing to do with improving the roads or increasing transit options, it has everything to do with feeding the unions.

Just another grab...

I use to keep a number of vehicles registered and now just about all are Non-Op and I trailer them to car events.

The minimum registration is pushing a $100 in my county... some of the cars I do have registered drive less than a tank of fuel each year and still require smog, insurance, etc.

Neighboring States have 5 year license plates for older cars... not California.

I have car friends in other countries and they can have up to 3 cars on one license plate... the theory being only one can be driven at a time... so you pay for the most expensive one and add $10 for each additional car... sound logical and fair.
