Leisure World in Seal Beach is nice, but the places are smaller. It's great for retirement though; my Dad loved it! They have swimming and golf, great medical, and free transportation to shopping. Free concerts in the amphatheater and a farmer's market.

If you are looking for a modern house, 250 k is not enough unfortunately. I`m also searching for some real estate there to invest money.
Look at some options

I find it very hard to believe you can't find a nice 1,500 sq ft house in Palm Springs with a budget of $500K. When I was looking at the area less than 6 months ago, you could get something really nice in that range for around $300K.

So, you think the mountains just jump right out of the sea? We're all hanging by our fingernails from cliffs?

Or are you asking if you can live in the nice, warm beach areas of California for cheap? Sure, in the ghettos.

Notwithstanding the troll responses, multiple locations have been provided to OP including a posting by myself and a posting by another person with actual properties that fit OP's criteria.

I don't think OP can be helped any further. His question has been answered several times in this thread.

Salinas is 11 miles from Monterey Bay and less than 30 minutes drive from the Monterey Peninsula which is one of the most beautiful spots in California and the country (Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Pebble Beach). It has some of the cleanest air of any city of over 100,000 in the country thanks to the strong marine on-shore push every afternoon and it rarely gets over 75 degrees in the summer. There are two good hospitals in the city. Its also just 45 minutes south of San Jose for big city stuff and a larger airport. There is some Latino gang related crime in the poorer neighborhoods, but I was never impacted by it (nor anyone else I knew) in the seven years I lived there. Also, even though its heavily Hispanic English is still the primary language of business and education. I never had an issue being English speaking only (you won't run into the attitudes and arrogance of the Cubans and wealthy Latin Americans of Miami concerning Spanish). I would live there again without hesitation.
We have friends who have lived in the San Vincente ave. neighborhood, for 30 years. This is south Salinas.

Des-lab and semispherical show that Californians can do sarcasm just as well as New Yorkers I was a NYer and now I'm a Californian.

Actually, they forgot to add easy access to hiking and nature.
