Define affordable?

Either your going to settle for the ghetto of a large urban area or a not-so-leftist suburb kinda far from major job centers.

Would you be ok with a Mobile Home of sorts...very nice ones at that price, or perhaps a run down Condo? San Luis Obispo woud be perfect for what your looking for then. And yes, they do have nice mobile homes parks.

I was referring to the post recommending Ben Lomond as way expensive. Santa Cruz county and surrounding areas are crazy expensive but they fit your criteria in other ways. I think that the average cost of a home is 7 - $800,000! (don't quote me) and you'd be surprised how little you get for that.

Expensive yes... but cheaper the farther out you go. I was surprised to learn the high number of people living "Off Grid" in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Realtor.com list 33 homes for sale and only a handful are under 300K

If you like small town living, having a home deep in the Redwoods and a liberal lifestyle... I would still do some investigating

Liberal or leftist is probably irrelevant. The most liberal town is probably about 5% more liberal than the most conservative town. It's in the noise.

Try Pico Rivera. It's a cultural melting pot with a vibrant hippie culture. One of the advantages of Pico Rivera is that you can live in a harmonious, "peacenik" environment and still have access to Los Angeles' job market.

Talking Left and thrifty

What's your idea of "affordable'? Arcata is left, mostly, but being a college town it's not cheap. Anything under $300K would be a fixer. Someone mentioned Willits, which is HOT now (not just the summer weather) and being touted as "the new Garberville". It would also help to know if you need to be concerned about jobs. You might google the northcoastjournal online and find their blog thread, "The Glory that is Willits". Give us tighter specs, we can give you better information.

willits is not on coast but is only 2 1/2 hours to SF, which is a bonus.

arcata proper is more expensive than almost the entire area around it. 250k can do you real well in humboldt. can't get any further west in the continental, either. if that a'int left WHAT IS???
