My family and I are thinking of moving to Pacifica. How is the weather, is it really foggy all the time? What is the community like? Commute to SF? How are the schools?

Default Love it!

Hi there- I used to live in Pacifica, and I really loved that town! It's absolutely gorgeous (especially if you're right on the water like I was), quiet, and has kind of an old-fashioned feeling. It's safe to walk around even at night, and the people are mostly nice & friendly. According to city-data's info, the crime rate was only 126 in 2004, which is about 1/3 the national average!

But to answer your questions... yes, it can get VERY foggy, and the temperature's usually 5-10 degrees colder than the rest of the Peninsula (during the day). Fog can show up almost any time, but the "foggy season" is usually between September-November. They even have a festival in September to celebrate it, and one of their slogans is "Where in the fog is Pacifica?" I personally didn't mind the weather, since I'm a redhead who hates the sun, but for some people it gets a little depressing. Also, the drive on highway 1 into town can be treacherous, as you can barely see when it's foggy. But I swear you get used to it, and even learn to drive without seeing - hehe. Plus you can always drive 10 minutes to another city, where it will be sunnier... and when Pacifica is sunny, it's really incredible!

Regarding the commute to SF, it really depends on what part of the city you're heading to. If you're going to the west/coastal side (Sunset district, Richmond, etc.), it's quite easy... without horrible traffic, it can easily be done in 10 minutes. But if you're going further, like downtown or Embarcadero areas, the traffic can get a bit nasty... if you know the city streets, you can always ditch the freeway & take a back-route. But Pacifica is very convenient to 280, which has MUCH lighter traffic than other highways, and getting to the airport and 101 is quick.

Finally, I don't know about the schools since I don't have kids, but I do work in the educational field (librarian)... and from what I know, they are perfectly fine. They should be as good, if not better, than schools in the nearby cities. Anyway, good luck with the move, and let me know if you have more questions!

P.S. If/when you move there, be sure to visit Colombo's Delicatessen at Manor Plaza... really yummy sandwiches & Italian food products!
