Unless you have your CPA accountant jobs in small towns generally do not pay well. Government accounting jobs with a BS usually start at 45-50k in California so check with El Dorado, Nevada and Sacramento Counties for openings. You might also check Washoe County but they don't usually have many openings. My son is an accountant (UNR grad) and he had 3 jobs in Reno and none paid over $22 an hour. He was going to go to work where my husband was employed in Washoe County for a fortune 500 company, he was on the list when the firm decided to outsource all of their accounting and just keep in house accounting clerks. He gave up and moved to California and went to work for a County in the bay area -his starting pay was almost 60k

Many of us live in Placerville area to be close to snow in the winter and kayaking/rafting in the summer.

We work down in Sacramento.
