I am living in Seattle and have an opportunity to move to the Fresno area for a job (career advancement). We are huge (not literally) sailors (racing and recreational). Will we find a sailing community in the area? How far to a sailing venue/lake for the small boat? Would Clovis or Sanger (or other?) areas be reasonable for living and commuting? How far is San Francisco? Pros and cons for moving and living in the valley? Does anyone have any experience with this hospital?

Well, this isn't Fresno but check out the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford (Palo Alto) Lucile Packard Children's Hospital - Stanford University Medical Center. San Francisco bay with many boat marinas is nearby.

The bad news: the cost of living and housing in the bay area is higher than that in the Fresno area .

There's an active dinghy racing fleet that travels the inland reservoir circuit including Shaver Lake and Bass Lake near Fresno. It's mostly Lasers and Hobie Cats. I keep saying next year is the year I'm going to get active again after sailing on SF bay as well as Puget Sound. You're going to love not having to dress warmly to go sailing!

Call the Fresno West Marine Store for more information.

Clovis and Sanger wouldn't be horrible commutes, except that there isn't a freeway that would be a direct shot. Herndon can be a pain during rush hour.

If this is the children's hospital along Hwy 41 (freeway) in north Fresno, than anyplace in north Fresno would be a good place to live. The northern end of Fresno is quite nice with lots of new houses, schools, shopping - most built in the last 10 or 15 years. Clovis is also good. Avoid the south side of Fresno.

I have driven by the children's hospital many times (fairly new building complex) but know nothing about it.

San Francisco is about 3 hours away - probably longer if you're towing a boat. Near Fresno is Millerton Lake Millerton Lake Marina. I'm not a boater, so I don't know much about it. There are other lakes east of Fresno in the Sierra foothills.

As the other poster mentioned, Childrens is closer to North Fresno and close to Millerton Lake. I have seen mostly motorized boats on Millerton. Sanger is closer to Pine Flat Lake (approximately 5 miles) and you can get a brand new house (4-5 bedrooms 3 bath) extremely cheap right now (250K-300K) due to the housing glut. Sanger is a nice friendly community of about 15K people with a good school system. Clovis is bigger and more expense and also has a good school system. Clovis is closer to Shaver Lake about 35-40 miles and they do sail there. However, a little farther from Shaver Lake is Huntington Lake and they have an annual sailing regata during the summer that attracts sailors from all over the state and beyond. I don't know a lot about it because I don't sail, but it appears to be a big deal. There may be something online about it. Anyway, if you like to sail there are probably a number of venues that will accomodate you in the valley because there are quite a few lakes here. My friend teaches in the healthcare field here and is very familiar with Children's Hospital. It is a good hospital and a nice place to work from what she tells me. Why don't you take a trip to check out the area?

Thanks, this is the Children's Hospital in Madera. We're looking at the Yosemite Lakes area for residence, any experience with or knowledge of that area?
