I'm considering a move to California from Houston, TX.

I have been offered jobs in both San Francisco (PG&E - financial district) and LA (Southern California Edison in Rosemead).

Both cities seem to have their pluses and minuses - culture and sticker shock.

At the moment, I am thinking about a move to Pasadena. Can anyone tell me anything about the area in terms of safety/commute to Rosemead?

I worked at SCE (college intern job) in Rosemead in the summer of 1984 (during the Olympics). Your commute from Pasadena doesn't look bad at all, probably around a half hour (I'm just looking at google maps so this isn't real experience). That SCE facility is nice and the neighborhood isn't bad at all (at least it wasn't in the mid 1980s). Nice cafeteria (don't remember if there was a gym there but I wouldn't be surprised if they had one there.)

I commuted from Woodland Hills to Rosemead in a van pool. Of course it was the Olympic summer and traffic actually went down. But even then the driver was always tuning in KNX or KFWB for traffic reports.

Most of the communities near Rosemead are pretty nice. If Pasadena turns out to be out of reach, try looking into Arcadia, Monrovia, or Rosemead, or one of the other communities a little farther away (Duarte, Bradbury, Azusa, Glendora, etc.). All of these are within easy commuting distance (depending on what you consider "easy"), and the plus to Pasadena is that you would actually be going against most of the traffic if you work normal hours. The SCE facility in Rosemead is adjacent to the 210 Freeway, so anyplace you can have easy access to the 210 is a plus. I can't really add anything for PG&E in San Francisco, though.

Think this poster meant the 10 freeway. The Rosemead facility is about six or seven miles south of the 210 freeway.

Actually, I was thinking of the 210, but I was thinking of another SCE facility. Thanks for the correction.
