It faces south and is somewhat protected from the cool winds off the ocean so it's warmer and not quite as windy/foggy as most places directly along the coast. I don't really like the town/local culture/people that much though.

When we were teen-agers we played in the water without wetsuits at Carmel Beach/Monterey/Seaside/Marina/Santa Cruz..........When the weather was nice.

This past summer/fall was unusually warm both the water and the weather. Very very little fog too. We swam and surfed without wetsuits in various parts of Santa Cruz on several times different trips.

The Santa Cruz coast is just perfect for me varied from beach, bay, cove, bluff, cliff, excellent reliable surf. One of the few city beaches that allow fire pits and dogs (Seabright Beach). About 15-20 miles of true south facing beaches and coast line.

Santa Cruz has "urban" problems, and some of the people are a cross from fascist ultra-liberals, homeless, self-righteous hippies, transplanted temporary students, coastal snobs, aloof immigrant owners, but some old fashioned down to earth regular folk too. I still love the place,

Santa Barbara also has south facing beaches.

I remember many sunny days in Colorado when the high was -7. There are no clouds on the moon. Any questions?
