My thanks to everyone who responded. I took a trip over to the area shortly after my last post in November and got a room for the night in SLO. Had planned on spending a day of recon before heading up to Big Sur for the camping trip. My wife called early in the AM to tell me her Father had passed away in NY, so I had to abort. Pretty much everything has gone down hill from there, but we're still holding onto the dream of relocating, although five years is beginning to look optimistic. Still, I'd like to find a town/area that fits that dream. The sooner I know what I'm up against, the sooner I can start working on making it happen. Hopefully I can take another trip out early next year. (Just found out the warranty on my right knee has expired and it will have to be replaced in October (don't feel sorry for me -I definitely have gotten my money's worth out of my body).

If anyone has anything else to add, please do. Still looking for any and all insights from the locals. stellar9, the C-D page has a photo of bikers on a "charity run" in front of the Elkhorn...what % of the locals belong to Hell's Angels? I had a lot of contact with the 'dirty diapers' (sorry, the Dirty Dozen) during the 1980's before they patched over. Never anything too bad, but unfortunately law enforcement and biker "clubs" sort of have that water and oil relationship. Unless they run the town, it's not a deal-breaker; I've lived within 5 miles of an east Mesa, AZ clubhouse for years and was never bothered off duty. So, I'll keep an open mind about San Miguel.

Thanks again for your input, folks. aj

After several months perusing this forum for insight on relocation options for our family in the SLO area, I have developed a penchant for your posts, greatbasinguide. You are eloquent and witty and seem to share many of the QOL values as my husband and I do, so I hope you don't mind if I just badger you directly. We live in a house that looks just like yours in Truckee, but in a Pennsylvania town that has gotten too suburban and too cold for our old bones. (Lets just say we were born when the states were only 48.) You strike me as a gregarious type who likes his space. We are community minded enough-volunteer firefighters- just as long as we can escape to our solitude. I was born and raised in CT but my CA ancestors are calling me back to Gold Rush roots. My husband has family in L.A. recommending Frazier Park? We haven't seen FP but think we might prefer the Central Coast. We can run our IT business out of the house from anywhere, so we are looking for over 30 acres in a small town close to a superior university to raise our twin 8-yr-old boys. Your observations regarding your daughter's graduation were especially poignant. How lucky they are, that their parents cared enough to pick the right place. So my question is, if you were to raise them again, which small town in the region would you want to raise a family today? One thing about where we are-- you can still leave your doors unlocked. In what town could we, there?
We are coming in mid-March to search in Cayucos, Templeton, and Santa Margarita. Thoughts? I guess it would help to know the budget - I am thinking $800,000-2MM depending on what other properties we unload. We would probably rent for a year to make sure it is a good move. Thanks for listening, and appreciate any insight you might have!

I was born and raised in SLO county. My family has lived here for years (as in ggrandma was Chumash Indian) and I would not call San Miguel or Santa Margarita nice areas. My mom said when she was in high school if anyone wanted drugs San Miguel was the place to go, and things haven't changed. I'm not saying people are violent or mean like in big cities but just bummy.

Templeton and atascadero used to be gas station towns, but with all the retirees they have suddenly become wine and yuppie money towns. Property for less than 400,000 is very rare.

If you want Big Sur area you definitely need to go further north up the 101.

SLO Co will always be home and there really is no place like it.
