Back again wanting to move to Southern California. All the way to the California/Arizona border if need be.

Where is the best place to move?

-1 bedroom apt or small townhouse/house
-No ghettos/hoods
-A smaller/quiet but friendly town or beachtown would be nice but not necessary.
-If there are safe areas in Los Angeles or San Diego that is nice also.

- Don't want to spend anymore than around $1200 for rent. Is this possible or a stretch?

Please post any useful information!!! Thank you guys!!!

Is the central coast out of the question?
If not, check out San Luis Obispo.

I second the Central Coast if that is something you are interested in.

In addition, I think you could probably find something in San Diego county, though it won't be right on the beach or anything fancy. With that low of a budget you will have to pick and choose locations and apartment buildings carefully. You want to avoid the seedy areas obviously. Take a look here:

If I were you, I would consider a shared room situation as well which will likely get you into a lot nicer neighborhood and place. Sometimes an elderly person will rent out a room or they may even have a small unit in back, for example.

This is such a common and very legitimate question, that I sometimes wonder if an Affordable SoCal sticky would be helpful?

It depends on what you want for your $1200. In Ventura or Oxnard, you can get a 1-br. for that. The Central Coast is pricier, and you'll more likely get a studio for that. The competition for the few 1-br's in your price range could be challenging, while further south, the rents are a little lower, so finding what you want would be a little easier. Either way, it's a tight budget. San Diego has the best deals for your budget.

There is no place nicer than San Luis Obispo. San Diego or LA will be more expensive.
