Now now! What if they tore out suburban areas and replaced them with more multi-story buildings and better transportation is what LA county really needs.

SoCal being flatter and more room for growth is why it has lower prices. The Bay Area is locked around mountains and oceans. Bay Area counties are also more "historically" progressive in zoning policies. LA to San Diego is mostly one big stretch of development. San Jose to San Francisco is all built out. East Bay and North Bay, however, still have undeveloped areas but are also some of the most progressive parts of the Bay Area. The rich people in Napa and Marin County don't want to give up their precious land for poorer people to live there.

Uh, where do the billions come from to do that and where do the people in the suburbs being take live and ... why do so? There is no law requiring that people live crammed together. It is a choice people make or don't make. Besides the cost would go wayyy up and well beyond what it is now, so defeating any benefit to anyone.

And they should do this why? It is their land.

Eminent domain. Of course those new developments would raise prices. Look at downtown LA.

So what's the point if a shoe box costs more than the 1500 sq ft home it replaced?

These are excellent observations, expat. For some reason many folks posting here seem to feel that since it is possible to cram more people together, it must be done to satisfy the gods of physics or something.

They want "cheaper housing" so they can afford to buy or even just rent an apt not a room with others. No way it will happen.

Part of the reason they want this is they are used to getting what they want NOW.

Life really isn't like that. You built a business as I did, invested wisely and are careful with your expenses. They want more, with less effort.
