I could be wrong here, but, is the OP asking about Business dress code? Because "business casual" can be a very nebulous term across the country and is often questioned.

Rural vs urban would be a better question. In my area you can spot a tourist a mile away.

As a side note, when we visit the Tahoe area (somewhat north of us-not where we live) we often get a "Locals Discount", because of how we dress. So yea, there is an unconscious dress code of sorts.

Perhaps. But, even then, it would be determined by the industry and office you work in. A "business" dress code isn't based on where you live.

I always think that "business casual" means "neat, clean and presentable" In other words, something you would feel comfortable going to your grandmother's house for lunch in. (And we all of different grandmas, of course.)

Perhaps. But, even then, it would be determined by the industry and office you work in, not by which part of California you live in. Most programmers don't wear suits and ties to work every day; lawyers need to own a suit for court.

I always take "business casual" to mean "neat, clean and presentable" In other words, something that wouldn't shock your grandma if you showed up wearing it for lunch at her house. (And we all have different grandmas, of course.)

Good point. More clarification needed from the OP.

Dress codes can vary by industry. Casual dress codes can vary not only by socio-economic group, but by age. I don't see too many people 40+ in flip flops, for example. They can vary by clique or group (hipsters vs. hip-hop vs. conventional). I do vaguely recall reading back in the early 90's, maybe, or earlier, that bootie shorts were a major trend in SoCal, or at least, around Venice Beach and other hip coastal strips. That was before I'd ever seen any, anywhere.

So maybe LA does get certain trends before they hit NorCal. And around LA, certain subcultures probably dress up more than in NorCal, or glitzier, than in NorCal, which tends to be more understated when dressing up, with the possible exception of opening night at the SF Opera.

So there are a few differences, as a niche phenom.

NorCal: flowing chiffon-embroidered capri pants matched to a sequined checkered shirt, low heeled saddle shoes with argyle stockings.
SoCal: skin-tight, pastel-colored Spandex shorts matched to a loose-necked, sheer cotton top, medium heel leather sandals with thin straps.

Okay, that settles it for menswear! Next up is what the ladies are wearing......

BTW, feel free to accessorize in either part of the state with an understated codpiece.

You must be from Northern California. I would find it hard to believe that anyone in Southern California would care enough to ask such a question.

SoCal Beach Communities/San Diego: flip flops and shorts for 10 months out of the year (due to the weather)

SoCal: casual, trendy, business casual for work, bit more glitzy than in NorCal

NorCal (San Francisco): black colored outerwear is more prevalent, trendy dress also

NorCal (East Bay / South Bay): generally more casual than "the city". Silicon Valley has the tech folks sometimes wearing company shirts (Cisco, for example).
