Good for California!

Prediction:
Those who will profess outrage that California uses taxation to discourage the recreational use of tobacco will mainly be from the same group that regularly expresses outrage that California might stop using criminal sanctions (fine and/or jail) to discourage the recreational use of marijuana.

Humm, imagine if they did that to marijuana if legalized.

Taxes on things that are purely optional are ok with me.

California has come very late to the cigarette tax party and $2 per pack more is still not high enough.

Cigarettes have been far too inexpensive for many years, compared to other states. It's shameful that we are currently 32nd with a tax of only $1.15 per pack.

As of April 1, 2016 the highest combined state-local tax rate is $6.16 in Chicago, IL, with New York City second at $5.85 per pack. Other high state-local rates include Evanston, IL at $5.48 and Juneau, AK at $5.00 per pack.

Here's the list online:

https://www.tobaccofreekids.org/rese...s/pdf/0097.pdf

Overall All States’ Average: .......$1.61 per pack
Major Tobacco States’ Average: ......48.5 cents per pack
Other States’ Average: .............$1.76 per pack"

I was very surprised to see so many people smoking cigarettes in San Francisco on my last trip there. In fact, I've never seen so many smokers in a single California city in all my time here. I suppose it was shocking because the Bay Area is often at the forefront of national health movements and trends along with LA and is touted as one of the healthiest regions of the country.

However, outside of the Asian-dominated areas in Orange County, smoking cigarettes is as taboo as it is in Phoenix or Salt Lake City. And in San Diego, forget it! LOL.

Clearly apples to oranges. I know this is an old argument, but it's still a fact that marijuana is attributed to 0 deaths per year, (not counting indirectly related deaths such as a car accident). Tobacco is what, close to half a million?
