Why did LA metro develop so much more than SD metro?

Obviously, the jobs, but what jobs does LA have more in abundance than SD, and why those jobs choose LA over SD?

SD has a large military presence, you think a lot of aeronautical industry will grow around there. It is also closer to Mexico, so you think there be more trade related industries there. The climate is pretty much the same.

Is it really just Hollywood? Or as I hear it the Doyers?

yes water. Phoenix could of been the Megaopolis of the west if LA never discovered/had access to clean water. Also LA being inland has an advantageous against San Diego giving LA more room to sprawl and development through a vast amount of land. San Diego's mountains aren't as interesting as the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains in LA's region. Also Malibu/Santa Barbara beats La Jolla/Coronado Island ANYDAY.

My guess would be a larger hinterland.

Los Angeles has an economic hinterland which extends around in a 225 degree arc including the large, buildable Los Angeles basin. In contrast, San Diego's hinterland extended around in a 90 degree arc because the international border effectively separated San Diego from regions to the south. Also, the railroad went to Los Angeles first. From these two things all else flows. As a larger city, motion pictures moved to Los Angeles from New York (probably another benefit of the LA Basin - sunnier than the coast, but flat, buildable, cheap land). Then as a larger city, Los Angeles had the resources to secure a reliable source of water before San Diego, and to build a harbor to match San Diego's natural harbor. LA's other natural advantage, oil, was not something San Diego could compensate for by manmade action.

Oh well, so sad for us San Diegans. We don't have the joy of sharing those LA freeways everyday with 10 million people.

I've always thought of San Diego as sort of isolated. If you live in San Diego, you basically just stay there most of the time.

LA has access to human capital from all over the basin (Orange County, Ventura, the Valley, etc). So the variety of suburban living choices is overwhelming compared to SD, so naturally people tend to choose to move to the LA metro, and live and work there.

I think San Diego though is nice as it is, and I've always been interested in buying property there as a sometimes vacation spot.
