Lived in Honolulu a couple years in the early 2000s. Yes, when I came back in late March I felt like I was going to freeze to death. That was only after two years of a tropical climate! At least with the cooler weather of NorCal I can imagine what someone who's always lived in a tropical climate must feel like when moving here. I don't know how they handle truly cold weather like the upper Midwest or New England.

Why do people speak of the 'climate of California'? There isn't one. There is not a more geographically and climatically diverse state.

There's the Mediterranean climate of the southern and central coasts and the coastal rainforests to the north. There are the hot central valleys and verdant inland forests in the north. There's high desert and low desert. There's sub-alpine and alpine regions. A lot more people are going to be 'too cold' in Redding or Mammoth Lakes than in San Diego.

There are states that have fairly uniform climates - Delaware, Iowa, others. But California isn't one of them.

whatever climate you are referring to, a person coming from the tropics will have to adjust to the cold come winter, whether mild winter in SoCal or freezing winter in Lake Tahoe

Im from Southern California (Topanga Ca) and when I lived in California I never felt it was really cold it was rather mild but when I left for Hawaii/Oahu and I lived in Hawaii for like 2 years and when I moved back to California I thought it was really cold. I remember that I moved back in November it took me like a week to adjust.
