Hi,

When I mentioned that my wife and I were considering moving to the Weed, CA area to my step daughter, who grew up in Klamath Falls, OR. Her reaction was EW!!! She didn't really elaborate.

She has not lived in Klamath Falls for some 15-20 years.

I know broadband Internet access would be a challenge in outlying areas but are there any other detractions to living in the town that does a brisque business in "I Love Weed" T-shirts?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

If you'd ever been there, you'd know.

I get that it's not Ashland or Arcata, but in your mind is it as challenged as Yreka?

I have a I<3 Weed, CA t shirt. It's a cool town and Mt. Shasta is pretty mind blowing. People from the TOWN of Mt. Shasta definitely look down upon the place though, so there's that.

We spent a night in Yreka twice on a trip to Tahoe and on the way back, and just the 106 summer temperature would keep me away. We did stop to check out weed, and it didn't seem as run down and economically depressed as Yreka despite being so much smaller. We looked it up, both have an unemployment rate of 11.8%. Weed definitely has the advantage for natural beauty.

Ha ha... funny memory about Weed...
My older brother has a place outside of Redding and before he retired, my older sister with her 2 kids and I, (a teenager at the time) went up from LA every year for vacation.

One morning on the way to Shasta Lake , there were two scruffy hippie types were standing on the side of the road with a big sign that said, "WEED!!"

Mind you this was in the mid '70's so not even close tolerated from a legal standpoint. My sister couldn't BELIEVE those people had the nerve to sell WEED right out on the street in the open! Lol! My brother had to explain they were hitchhiking to the town!

Oh well, my brother's now been retired on his place for the past 20 plus years and my husband and I go up and see him every year. We usually stay a few days, then take off to up to Oregon and Washington for a week.

We've stopped at the Weed store, funny stuff even if we don't partake ourselves, and there's the Hi Ho cafe which is pretty good. A few years ago they had a heck of a fire and some people lost their homes. We made sure to stop at the cafe on our way up the 5 to give them some love.

So Weed is right between Redding, and Ashland, Ore. about an hour and a half to each if you need a sort of "city fix". If you like the great outdoors, and like smaller towns you'll probably might like the village of Weed. Many day trips to be enjoyed!

Sorry I don't have more personal experience with the town outside of quick visits... I don't know what the crime rate or education is like, but I didn't really get a "yuck" feeling. But with these small towns you just have to go check them out for your self, hang out at the local cafe, see if you like the vibe.

p.s. Yreka has one of our favorite restaurants called The Purple Plum. Yummy breakfasts too!

My wife has a friend we visit from time to time in Mount Shasta. I like the town Mount Shasta, Weed not so much. I would rather be in Yreka than Weed.
