I work for a large telecommunications company. If I get the job in Manchester it will pay a little under 100K.

I have cash, a house and an apartment in Texas. I can keep them and rent them out, or sell them. I might, or might not bring my wife with me. (She would visit, probably for the entire summer to escape the Texas heat.) If I do not bring her with me, I will need a small place, if I do bring her, a nicer place. Oh, and I am over 50, no kids at home, and the dog died.

I understand Manchester is remote, so I might have to live as far away as Fort Bragg.

I am just wondering how I should even feel about this job.

I have left Texas and moved to Fargo, (I loved Fargo.) and then to Sioux Falls, (It is a nice town, but I don't love it like Fargo.) I have lived overseas, on the East Coast, in New York, D.C. Hong Kong and in the south, Mobile, Houston. I have also lived in really small towns, like San Augustine Texas, Population 1200.

What I am trying to get a grasp on it, how is the weather? How does it make you feel? What is there to do? Hunting, Fishing, Hiking, Gardening, Hang Gliding?

I have to answer questions about earthquakes. Also, ants, roaches and other creepy crawlies. Not that we haven't experienced them.

Any input is appreciated.

Cheers
Qazulight

Default If small town quiet works for you, the area is very nice IMO.

A friend has owned a place just outside Manchester for 25+ years and yes it is remote. It had a logging history and still is a farm/ranch community. The town has little to offer that I can think of, a post office, general store, a feed store and a couple other businesses. If you like to drive, Fort Bragg to the north has 80% of what you need but I would not want that daily commute. Point Arena 10 miles and Gualala 30 miles south should work. I always stop in P.A. if it's A.M. and load up on killer pastry at the Cup and Saucer.
I like the light coat weather on the coast in that area. Not to hot or cold and when the sun shines, it's much appreciated. My friends neighbor was a hobby trapper. Inland from Manchester is pretty wild country still with a lot of outdoor recreation. Not sure about Hang Gliding. It is done here almost daily at the ocean bluffs. Never seen anybody up Manchester way. There is summer tourist traffic but most of the year it's just locals. Don't worry about earth quakes and there are fewer creepy crawlies than the Southwest for sure. That's all I got

It's a pretty remote little outpost. Personally, I couldn't stand to live that far from civilization so I hope you are good at entertaining yourself.

My own two cents about the weather is that it's a really cold and windy spot (and I live in a coolish area of the bay area.) If you like being where it's never above 70F and rarely above 65F it should suit you well.
