How about we tax viagra and other male sexual enhancement drugs, 40 cents a bottle? After all, they're not necessities, they're just "optional."

That will make up the difference in revenues lost in taxing menstrual supplies, which aren't optional for women.

Of course, some people might consider menstrual supplies for women optional and not necessities. After all, women could just strap some bloody rags between their legs like they used to do in olden times.

You guys could spritz your women (if you have any) with the Aqua Velva to keep the odors down.

Yeah, that should work. Ha ha!

In all seriousness, this bill is not asking the state to pay for women's menstrual supplies. It is just removing a tax on something that should not be taxed because it is a necessity for every women between the ages of 12 and 58.

The loss in revenue is estimated to be 21 million a year. That could be made up by adding small taxes to discretionary spending items, such as cigarettes, alcohol, luxury goods, etc.

I also would like to see taxes removed on diapers and toilet paper. Again, those are things that are not discretionary spending items -- you have to use them. (I would remove the tax from both cloth diapers and disposable so it is equal). I also would argue that toothpaste and toothbrushes should not be taxed.

I understand that others might have different views, and that is fine. But, really, can't we have a civil discussion about this instead of resorting to the obnoxious sexist jokes?

Do women and men pay different prices on cell phones? Your analogy doesn't work.

What about ladies nights " women enter free" or " free drinks for women"

Would this lawmaker write a bill against those ?

It's sexist . Why should men pay more for entry and drinks ?

I'm assuming that article was written as a joke. Well, except for the chocolate of course. That is a requirement. The rest is all personal choice or not needed.

And I figured mine out--4 boxes a year x 40 years is $800 for my "lifetime." Plus chocolate.

In fact, of all the states with sales tax, only the following exempt (logically, as they're a basic necessity - the same logic by which most states exempt groceries and prescription drugs from sales tax, as do a lamentably few enlighted states do for non-prescription drugs) feminine hygiene products - IL, MA, MD, MN, NJ, PA. Blue states all. Meanwhile, every last red state that has a sales tax (which is to say, all red states save AK and MT) taxes feminine hygiene products. That's right, from AZ to IN, SC to TX, ID to KS, LA to ND.

And now, back to your regularly-scheduled whining about Democrats!

Uh, jm, really.
One instance is a retailer's optional marketing gimmick.
The other is a government mandated tax on one sex's required health product.

Guess which one is which.

Is the government mandating that bars put on "women enter free" nights?
