Hello everyone I recently purchased a salvaged Ford Mustang with a california salvage certificate. The owner bought it at an auction and repaired it and it is now quite roadworthy. They also gave me a dealer reassignment form.
My issue is that night after going home I noticed a stamp on the back of the certificate that says export only, however the certificate shows current registration good through next year.
I have gone to the dmv and the two employees who looked at the certificate never said anything about the stamp and set me up for an application for a rebuilt title showing I need smog certification, brake and lamp certification, vin verification, and pay a $370 registration fee.
There isn't much information about this problem online, so any experience or guidance would be appreciated because I can't see any reason why the vehicle would not be registerable but I don't want to waste another $400 to just be denied registration.

Another "gotcha" with salvage title vehicles is that your insurance company may only be willing to offer liability, no collision coverage.

I would suggest that you speak to a Registration Manager, either at your local DMV office, or over the phone at the service center.

Also, if you Google California export only title you'll get hits for a variety of people who've done this already and what steps they took.

Some say all that is needed is the safety and emissions certification paperwork, another person needed further approval from u.s. customs so it sounds like a very grey area for the dmv.
Would it be advisable to contact my local u.s. customs office before rolling the dice with my title application?
