They grow more trees than they cut down. There are more trees now than a hundred years ago. It isn't a problem.

People in some places regrow their trees. Along the Amazon, not so much.

Taking money to give it to businesses??? You like that?

Why not ban all plastic bags period and require paper, free as in the past, and .... end the problem?
I agree with the thicker bag part. I would think those things would take longer to decompose.

That has no effect on CA as the paper bags do not come from there.

The Amazon area is a mess. CA's biggest problem is the diseases hitting the trees.

I also used to use them to scoop the unflushable cat litter into them... um so I'm going to just buy plastic bags again? I'm a little confused... I mean they will still be selling the plastic bags in stores right? Sooo... I'm going to buy plastic bags for the the things I used to use the plastic bags I used to get for free from the store?

I get the using reusable bags for shopping...
OBTW, what about paper bags? Are they charging for those? (no I haven't been to a regular store yet where I would get the occasional paper bag)

Ideas for my first world problem? So just buy the plastic?
Thanks!
Update...

Since I'm a somewhat daily or every other day shopper for me and my hubby's empty nest, I go ahead and buy the 10 cent plastic bag. Since it's thicker and stronger, I only need one to hold all the items I buy, and I can carry a jug of milk without a bag.

However I haven't been reusing them for shopping, I'm lining my small trash can in the kitchen with them. They are slightly bigger, so when my hubby does the rounds of taking out the trash and doing the cat box, (he used to use a double bag from the store when they were free cause they were thin and the wet cat liter gets pretty heavy with 2 cats) he just starts with the bag in the kitchen, grabs the trash bits front room and bathroom and scoops the liter into the same bag.

So yeah, I suck because I'm not rinsing them out (with our scarce water) and reusing them, but I'd have to buy plastic anyway to line my bin and take the cat crap out right?

Hmmm... I might go ahead and try buying a roll of plastic anyway as long as I find some thick strong ones. At least they wouldn't have the handles and apparently those handles are a problem for the fishies in the ocean.

As for paper bags, I ask for double paper bags once in a while because I use a single one under the sink for recyclables. When it fills up, we put it out next to the trash bin in our apartment complex at night because people come by and scavenge for recyclables. Of course our local Stater bros is charging a dime for those as well. Hmm....

Maybe my solution is to quit cooking and not have cats anymore.

Suggestions? I mean it's gross if I don't, since I throw coffee grounds, packaging for meat, and vegetable peelings etc. (and going vegan and using my coffee grounds for my organic garden I don't have isn't an option. ) and it would make paper bags soggy.
Besides I'd have to use out drought water to wash it out!

Yes, but overall we need more trees. But where do plastic bags come from? By product of oil. Which is what the environmental rails against. Talk about hyprocrisy.

Do you think CA is isolated? Why do we care if the ice melt in the Arctic then?

The subject is bags, not the ice melt.

I am very much not following. Would she have had fewer bags if they were free?
