Hi,
I am currently living in texas as I have for most of my life and I want a change of scenery. I am currently in college but plan to graduate early and want to move possibly to California. I know that it is extremely expensive there and I just want to know if anyone can help me figure out is there anywhere in California affordable to live near a big city? (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego)

There isn't really anywhere near the big CA cities that would be considered "affordable", unless you want to live inland (Sacramento, Fresno, etc). Also, "affordable" is subjective. We don't know what your definition of affordable is. All of the cities you mentioned have a much higher cost of living than anything you'd be used to in Texas. Generally, the closer you are to the coast, the more expensive. You really need to narrow down exactly what you're looking for to get any good suggestions. Like Texas, California is a huge state and most of it is nothing like what many peoples' stereotypes about it are.

Brian,
What type of job are you preparing for in college?

Even an expensive area can be do-able for someone who has a job with an adequate salary for the living costs of the area.

Get the job first and then figure out where to live.

Tell us what type of job you'll be looking for after you get your degree, and perhaps folks here will have some suggestions on where in California to focus your job search.

Good luck with your plans!
