Calexit - California Secession Petition Gaining Strength After Trump Win | Zero Hedge

In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children.

Although charity is part of our culture, when you consider that California’s infrastructure is falling apart, our public schools are ranked among the worst in the entire country, we have the highest number of homeless persons living without shelter and other basic necessities, poverty rates remain high, income inequality continues to expand, and we must often borrow money from the future to provide services for today, now is not the time for charity.

However, this independence referendum is about more than California subsidizing other states of this country. It is about the right to self-determination and the concept of voluntary association, both of which are supported by constitutional and international law.

It is about California taking its place in the world, standing as an equal among nations. We believe in two fundamental truths: (1) California exerts a positive influence on the rest of the world, and (2) California could do more good as an independent country than it is able to do as a just a U.S. state.

In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the international community with their “Brexit” vote. Our “Calexit” referendum is about California joining the international community. You have a big decision to make.

I would vote against it. It's idiotic enough here. As far as I am concerned I'm a American. It's not gonna happen anyways.

So, how would you vote?

I'd be pretty torn on it, I mean I am already considering leaving the state, that decision would just have even bigger consequences. I would have to think about it.

When I first learned of this concept, I scoffed at the notion.

Now, I could see myself staying here to vote for Calexit, then leaving the state (regardless of outcome). I'm a American, first and foremost, not just in terms of citizenship but also emotion, culture, identity, mentality, and psychology. If the majority of voters in California want out that badly, let 'em try to leave. The other states would have to approve their departure, though, and California would have to formally declare its independence.

If this state's residents are so confident that it can survive on its own (even with its tax and water issues, yes even with the recent rains), hates "bigoted" middle America that badly, and so confident that Eric Holder, Kamala Harris and a 13.1% maximum income tax rate are the answers to all the world's problems, then hell! Figure it out on your own.

I don't think true secession will ever actually happen, though.

I actually like California. The cost of living doesn't even bother me that badly. It's just the politics. Ugh.

I'm thinking of getting my guns first. Shore up my second amendment. I agree it's not the tax, it's politics.

Everyone makes comments when they think something is too stupid--"it's like having the DMV run it."

Having California leave the US would put DMV in charge of your new country. Think about it.
