I'm not sure I've ever seen houses listed in California under $10K that looks like it could be liveable. A lot of houses in Baltimore that are in this price range looks like it's livable (i.e. strong foundation) but needs renovation. Of course in a questionable location. I think even the worst of CA (say South Central) doesn't even have anything less than $200K. Is the price range of $10K more of a Northeast and Midwest thing?

You can find homes for under $100,000 in the desert areas, but you have to be OK with heat and sand. There are also homes listed for under $100,000 northern edges of the state.

A few examples:

All $10,000 will buy you in California is an old RV/mobile home or maybe a useless empty lot out in Salton City.

Then again, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to live in any neighborhood in Baltimore where homes are selling for under $10,000.

You're kidding right? Because my buddy just sold a nice mobile home out there for about 100k. And two other places in his park sold for 60 and 90 k respectively. [mod cut]

I think there is some confusion here about the difference between $10k (ten thousand dollars) and $100k (one hundred thousand dollars).

In general NO. Some mobile homes in the middle of nowhere or homes under $200,000.00 in crime filled areas or the middle of nowhere, yes .

I am guessing the poster is asking whether the raw construction cost of the house or building itself is lower than the Northeast or Midwest and not necessarily the final selling price that includes the land and everything else. I been to those places before and it appears houses there look like they are built better than those in California. Though I guess nowadays you just can't judge a book by its cover regardless of where its built or how it looks like. Builders these days are known to be cheap and cut corners and costs whenever they can get away with so they can gain maximum profits off each home sell. Some barely gets away with meeting or even not meeting basic codes.

You can't even buy a new car for $10K.

Yep.

The original poster asked about homes for sale under $10k (ten thousand dollars) not under $100K ($100,000).

Since he also said he doesn't see anything for under $200K ($200,000), I offered some suggestions for places where you might find homes for under $100K ($100,000).

But, a livable single family home for $10K --- $10,000 --- in California? Nah.

The OP really does mean 10K. There are houses for 10K in the Upper Midwest. Although most of them are in bad hoods or are houses nearly stranded in the midst of stretches of urban prairie.

The $10K type of house in Baltimore would be almost $600,000 in San Francisco!
