We are considering retiring in Malibu but we are "seniors" and do have some medical issues. In researching on line I find routine medical care readily available, however I'm having difficulty finding information on hospitalization resources, especially emergency care. If we have an after hours emergency are just going to have to resign ourselves that we're not going to have care available, or is there care that we are just not finding? Thanks for your input.

Depends on where you are in Malibu, but UCLA is relatively close. There are no hospitals in Malibu. There is a private daytime urgent care place near the Country Mart.

Providence St. John's Hospital is in Santa Monica so that would be close, too.

Heaping on other responses.

Medical care in Malibu = WLA/Santa Monica, The Valley, Conejo Valley, Oxnard.

Isn't it interesting that there are two 24/7 emergency clinics for pets in Malibu, but none for humans.

Malibu is not a retirement mecca. Please take into consideration that Pacific Coast Highway is frequently beset with traffic jams (esp. in summer/weekends) and a crash can stop it completely. Not to mention rockslides, landslides, flooding from rain or high surf, dense fog, and wildfires. Sometimes even the canyon roads away from it are equally impassible. Malibu/PCH is not the place to be if possible medical emergencies are on your plate.

Others have wondered the same thing:

Hospitals are not big money making kind of places. They cost a lot to operate. Pardon the pun. You do have Los Robles in Thousand Oaks and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

You say it is not a retirement mecca and I don't doubt your belief, but statistically the median age of Malibu residents is sixteen and a half years older than the states median age (Malibu is 52.9 yrs, California is 36.4 yrs.), so it seems to me that there is a sizeable mature population there. You may not see them on the beach or in the clubs. Like me, they may just enjoy a home with an ocean view that can be very relaxing and soothing, and also, like me, they can afford it.
