I live in Long Beach, CA, and our condo's H.O.A. has just informed us they are no longer going to have an intercom system for our "security building". My impression, had always been that any gated community, (our building has 18 units), that had security gates would have to have an intercom system installed in the event of the fire or police departments having to enter in case of an emergency. Without the intercom system, there would be no way for them to gain immediate access if necessary, (not without extreme difficulty, anyway). Am I correct in this being a requirement by California law, or can they just do away with the intercom system at their own discretion this way? Thanks in advance.

Usually PD and FD have what us known as a Knox Box with keys that give them access to the building.
You need to go to the meeting because they can't just get rid if the intercom. While there us no law requiring a intercom i would ask why they are getting rid if it? Vandalism? Expense to maintain?

With the advent of cell phones, intercoms are not as important as they used to be.

Not necessarily. My former property has a gated entry. In order to open the gate for a guest you must provide a phone number. Otherwise you have to walk out to the gate and open the gate with your remote. The gate cannot be removed because its written in the CCRs as a gated community. And truthfully it kept a lot of people out
