Which city do you prefer for summer weather?

San Diego or San Jose

A) San Diego: June can be cool with too much marine layer but July and August are very pleasant as the marine layer will usually burn off early when it is there. Daytime highs average in the mid 70s and lows in the mid 60s with some warmer spells with highs in the 80s and overnight lows in the 70s so you don't feel chilly at night. Moderate humidity with the occasional monsoon influence and a few sticky days in late summer along with the very occasional warm monsoon rain shower. Highs rarely exceed 90 but nighttime lows below 60 are very rare in summer.

vs

B) San Jose: Definitely more sunshine as there is little marine layer at all as it is inland enough that it even when it makes it there it will burn off very early. Also warmer daytime highs but cooler lows with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s meaning you still need a hoodie for night events like fireworks. No monsoonal influence or humidity at all as when it does get heat waves, it is always a dry cloudless heat. Highs over 90 happen many time in summer but nighttime lows above 60 are uncommon and above 70 unheard of. Sometimes you'll get a day that's over a 100 but cools off until the upper 50s before sunrise.

Summer weather is pretty much identical in both cities. I'd say that San Diego is more mild and sunny overall and typically has higher temps in the winter. San Jose has more rainy days and is cooler in winter for sure.

In summer, both cities are susceptible to the marine layer...San Diego more so. San Diego probably has less extreme temperatures overall and both cities have many sunny days per year, but San Diego has slightly more.

I was born and raised in the San Jose area and love the weather there, but overall prefer the San Diego lifestyle. If you're specifically inquiring about weather, both cities are similar to each other. If you're inquiring about other quality of life issues, there are lots of other variables to consider. There are plenty of pros and cons to each city. I've spent plenty of time in both cities and overall prefer San Diego, but still like San Jose. One of my best friends who grew up in San Jose has lived in San Diego twice now for extended periods and has always ended up back in San Jose due to the job market. If money were no issue, she would've stayed in San Diego. I like San Jose for many reasons, but I also feel the same way. San Jose still feels like home to me, but I prefer San Diego...different strokes for different folks though.

Coastal San Diego. San Jose is far too hot.

It all depends on personal preference. Some people prefer warmer weather, such as myself. As far as summer weather goes, there are plenty of other Bay Area locations that have hotter weather than SJ. SJ itself has its own micro-climates that can vary quite a bit depending on which part of the city you're in.

San Diego can be better for those who like warm, balmy nights in August and September and can even feel warmer during the day if there's a bit of humidity in the air with pretty monsoon clouds and the very occasional thunderstorm (has a summer thunderstorm EVER happened in San Jose?) I agree, June wins hands down for warmth in San Jose though.

I used to live in San Jose and have experienced times of monsoonal moisture and even thunderstorms in the summer, and even this far north the occasional remnants of tropical storms track through and produce humidity and sometimes heavy downpours with a spectacular light show.

Though with San Diego much farther south. I would not be surprised these influences would be stronger and slightly more frequent. Someday maybe even a real tropical storm or hurricane might hit south western California. I remember Hurricane Linda back in 1996 almost did scrape up the coastline of CA fortunately it turned to the west.

Though based on my experience San Jose and the Bay Area can be more extreme in temperature changes as variations of temperatures can be large day to day depending on the tug of war between marine air that filters from the cold ocean through the bay and the hot inland airmass. It can either be very hot or very cold. Depending on the day and hour. It's not all that uncommon for temps to vary between 47 and 105 within a few days in the middle of summer.

Though remember both cities have microclimates and the warmest parts of the city can be 15f higher than the coolest part of the city.

No brainer. For Summer weather it's SD. Way milder than SJ in Summer.

Correction- San Diego: June is nearly perfect with the marine layer shielding the coastline from the burning sun but July and August are too hot as the marine layer will usually burn off early when it is there.

I prefer San Diego but will be certain to stay west of the 5 in summer.

San Diego's forecast for the next several days includes two chances of thunderstorms with daytime highs in the upper 70s/low 80s and nighttime lows in the upper 60s/low 70s and SST around 70 at the beaches.
